I numeri: 100 - 1 milione

Impariamo i multipli di cento:

multipli di 100
100	a hundred / one hundred cento	400	four hundred quattrocento

Thousand /'θaʊznd/ significa mille e si usa come hundred, cioè con l'articolo a o con i numeri. Per ricordarlo pensa di tradurre "un migliaio":

1000	a thousand / one thousand mille

Per formare tutti gli altri numeri usiamo la congiunzione and:

101 - 999
101	one hundred and one (= cento e uno) centouno	525	five hundred and twenty-five cinquecentoventicinque

In inglese usiamo la virgola per separare le migliaia e il punto per separare i decimali (in italiano è al contrario). La virgola non serve nei numeri composti da 4 cifre:

Milione si dice million /'mɪljən/ e si comporta come hundred e thousand:

Usiamo la congiunzione and prima delle decine e delle unità, ma non prima delle centinaia:

Alcune osservazioni

Se hundred si trova all'inizio di un numero possiamo usare sia a che one. Se invece si trova in mezzo ad altri numeri dobbiamo usare one:

Con thousand usiamo quasi sempre one, ma possiamo usare a quando il numero non contiene centinaia:

Quando un numero di 4 cifre finisce con due zeri (1000 escluso), possiamo leggerlo due cifre alla volta:

Per formare i numeri ordinali usiamo le stesse regole che abbiamo imparato nella Lezione 63:

Le parole hundred, thousand e million possono essere usate al plurale, ma solo quando non fanno parte di un numero. Vediamo la differenza:

Note

Negli esercizi useremo il suggerimento "numero" quando davanti a thousand o million useremo one (facciamo lo stesso con hundred, Lezione 51):

- Mille mucche e centosessanta pecore.	- A thousand cows and a hundred and sixty sheep.
- Mille (numero) mucche e centosessanta (numero) pecore.	- One thousand cows and one hundred and sixty sheep.

Per evitare di scrivere tanti zeri scriveremo i numeri dal milione in su così:

due milioni di persone two million people

2 milioni di persone
~~2.000.000 di persone~~ 2 million people
~~2,000,000 people~~
